Soup for breakfast
20th of June 2025I've been having soup for breakfast recently and it's been pretty good.
At the start of the week I made a big batch of tomato soup, bought some brie, and every morning since I have had soup, cheese, and bread for my breakfasts. This is a departure from my typical breakfasts of granola or toast in several respects. Having soup for breakfast has made me think about what makes a good breakfast, and I reckon I've narrowed it down to a couple of factors.
- It keeps me full until lunch.
- It is healthy.
- It is relatively quick and easy to prepare and eat.
- It is a light meal.
Soup and bread is quite a killer combo in knocking out all four of these conditions for a good breakfast. A good hunk of bread and some soup is always enough to last me until lunch, I'd consider it healthy, soup is generally quite light, and the actual morning preparation time only requires me to throw some soup in a pan while I cut up some bread and cheese. Not only that, but it's very tasty! While I prefer to make the soup myself (I am very intolerant to onions which are a common soup ingredient), someone without such a prediliction could easily cut down on time by buying soup I'm sure.
I will note that with such a simple breakfast as this, making sure everything is of decent quality is important. If you have the time I definitely recommend you make your own soups, it will help keep the meals feeling fresh. Picking some nice bread is also a must, and given the importance of fiber I recommend a fibrous bread. Personally I visited my local bakery and picked up a malt cob which has been very tasty. Finally, I like to have a bit of cheese with my soup for a treat and also some added protein.
There's nothing really crazy about soup for breakfast. I'm sure you're getting something comparable from Weetabix (though admittedly I have never been able to stomach the taste). But the joys of having what feels like a proper meal to start the day have been very fun and I plan to continue to include soup in my breakfast plans. Hopefully this blog post convinces you to try it out if you haven't already, even if you just grab a can of soup and some supermarket bread.
